More KnitPicks Samplers October 30, 2005

Filed under: Bargain Hunting — Manda @ 6:33 am

When KnitPicks introduced their Palette yarn they also offered a sampler including a ball of each available color. I thought that a pretty cool idea even if Palette wasn’t really my thing. Well, now they’ve added samplers for Wool of the Andes, Merino Style, Shadow (the heathered merino laceweight), Simple Stripes and Dancing. All include one skein/hank of each color except the sock lines which have two of each (enough for a pair of socks, natch).

Oooh.. I’d love to have WotA, Merino Style and Dancing. I’d also love to see them add Sock Landscapes and Sock Memories. If I ever get the hang of fingering-weight socks, I imagine I’ll quickly work my way through the colorways in those two yarns.

Knitting Humour October 28, 2005

Recently I’ve been enjoying BBC7’s broadcasts of old comedy radio programs. As it happens, this week’s I’m Sorry I’ll Read That Again features a sketch called the Addictive Knitter. It’s quite cute and runs less than three minutes so do check it out [Real Audio]. It begins around the 3:30 mark.

A Lego Ball Winder October 22, 2005

Coolness! Who wouldn’t like to have a ball winder made of Legos?

Caron Yarn at Big Lots October 12, 2005

Filed under: Bargain Hunting — Manda @ 1:19 pm

Once again Big Lots has yarn! This week’s circular features “fancy yarn” for $2.99 a skein. Specifically, the picture shows Caron Jewel Box and Cozi. I’ll try to go by there tomorrow to see it in person!

Update: Yep, Cozi and Jewel Box. I picked up 6 Cozi in two different red colorways. I got the last of those colors. For my store at least, Cozi is disappearing much faster than Jewel Box – possibly because the Walmart down the road has always had Jewel Box (with some even on clearance for about the same price as Big Lots) but never Cozi.

Sock Progress October 9, 2005

Filed under: Socks and Slippers — Manda @ 9:53 am

Yesterday’s high was only in the 50s, and yet I still found myself wearing a hat, gloves and a turtleneck. This is going to be a loong winter. All the aforementioned items were store-bought. I have the yarn to knit myself some proper winter accesssories (imagine.. gloves that actually fit!), but I made a vow not to do any projects for myself until the Christmas items are done (HP scarf excepted). I may have to make another exception for Knitty’s Coif, though. My ears can’t stand cold air, and often a hat or hood is too much.

Meanwhile, I’ve been working exclusively on my first sock for a week now, and my progress amounts to almost 3″ of one cuff. Pitiful! The other day I read a knitter say that socks were “quick knits” because a pair could be made in a week. Ha! I am starting to get the hang of fingering-weight yarn and #1 needles, but I can’t do it by touch yet. Due to the splitty nature of Essential I have to watch what I’m doing, and the dark grey yarn color is hard on the eyes. Dropped stitches has also been a problem, and the smallest crochet needle I had was still several sizes too big. (A trip to Walmart yesterday fixed that, though.) On top of it all, using dpns is hard on the wrists and forearms, so they’re hurting too. It’s just been one miserable week for knitting.
