It seemed fitting to begin Summer of Stash with the oldest yarn in my stash. The red and blue yarn dates back to the French flag vest I crocheted for extra credit in my high school French class. I don’t have any memory of the teal yarn, but it too must come from that brief crochet period. The white was left over from last year’s cabled handbag.

At first I didn’t plan beyond just knitting ’til I ran out of yarn, but eventually I settled on the alternating rings idea which was nice until I ran out of colors. :( Luckily I had enough teal left over for a narrow border. (Picked up stitches all around and then cast off as if to purl.) Eventually even the soft white ran out: the very last two rows are white-white, again from the flag vest. As a stash buster this was quite efficient – no more than a few yards remain of any of these yarns.

As long as it took me to knit this you’d think it would be a good sized blanket, but no, the final measurements are barely lap blanket size. I was quite disappointed by that, but then I’ve never been good at gauging how far x amount of yarn will go.

I like the log cabin process of knitting, but I’m not certain I’d jump at the chance of knitting another afghan. It’s fun enough for the first few rounds, but I get bored as the rows get longer. A better idea might be to sew together smaller log cabin squares.

The blanket looks great. I started one, but didn’t get very far.

Terrific job! I just finished a log cabin blanket for my daughter, and it was a lot of fun.
