A Ridiculously Simple Question August 23, 2006

Filed under: Knit Alongs, Socks and Slippers — Manda @ 12:21 pm

I didn’t ‘discover’ socks until the end of last year, so this is probably going to sound stupid… What is Socktoberfest? I mean, I know it’s a sock KAL that was held last October (with another one planned this year), but despite my not-inconsequential Google skills, I can’t find a description of what it actually is, you know? Is it a how many socks can you knit in a month contest thing? A sock swap? Or just a Who wants to knit socks? Let’s do it together! kind of idea? All of the above?

Speaking of socks, it’s finally donned on me that there’s only a week left in August, and by George, by Jove, by Jeeves, I have to get one of these pairs finished! The Twisted Socks have been selected, and I’ll work on them and them alone (and no, dishcloths aren’t exempt) until this UFO becomes and FO! I added another inch to the cuff this morning during another Eddie Izzard DVD, Glorious. I have some Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie on tap for the next knitting session. :) Only 1.5 inches left until the heel flap.

  1. Socktoberfest is a KAL hosted by Lolly… for the month of October, you knit socks. Last year she had a contest for most socks completed and all that stuff, so it’s kinda cool. I don’t remember her url off the top of my head (i THINK it’s lollygirl.com), but she’ll probably have some sort of archive or something. :)

As Manda says, Socktoberfest was hosted by Lolly. I don’t know if there will be a new kal this year, but I surely hope so! You find Lolly here: http://www.lollygirl.com/blog/index.php?blogId=1

Hey! Socktoberfest is really just a celebration of socks, and of sock knitting – kind of a place where “seasoned” sock knitters can share their expertise with new sock knitters, and where every one can share reviews on patterns, yarns, etc. There is not a “how many socks can you knit” component, although some participants like to do that. It is all about no-pressure for me. Last year, we had contests running all month long, and this year, we will too. Giveaways for participants, etc. It would be great to have you in the group. Stay tuned for more updates this month on my blog ;)

Ooh! I love Fry and Laurie, too. We’ve been re-watching the first season of Jeeves and Wooster this past week and looking forward to next week’s premiere of House.
